Climate Change is no longer a myth, it is a reality. Recent years have made it abundantly clear that it is one of the most pressing issues we as a collective must grapple with. Here at the Economy Zero Group, we aim to shed light on economic solutions that tackle the root of this issue.
The Big Ideas
The Economy Zero Group, began as "The Decarbonomics Initiative." Decarbonomics is a portmanteau, or a word made up of two separate words: Decarbonization and Economics. Its meaning is derived directly from the two words to imply the economic analysis of decarbonization strategies. We formed The Decarbonomics Initiative with one simple idea in mind: decarbonization does not have to be uneconomic. The all too common narrative that sustainability means higher costs and giving up standards of living is not accurate or absolute. A lot of the time, sustainability means improving the efficiency of things, which in turn means improving the bottom line. Now as the Economy Zero Group we continue with the goal to shed light on the economic benefits of decarbonization.
Our turn to the Economy Zero Group, is rooted on two additional ideas. The first is that to achieve a net-zero economy, we not only have to highlight the economics of decarbonization, but in many ways we will also have to completely rethink economic systems. And secondly, to achieve this redesign, we will need a multi-disciplinary, and multi-cultural community of practice of people working towards decarbonization.
We continue to have a specific focus on the Global South as we see both a knowledge gap, and a climate finance gap for these countries; and simultaneously, an opportunity to leapfrog fossil-fuelled industrialization.
Our Mission
The Economy Zero Group aims to support the global shift towards a zero-carbon future by providing and highlighting ideas, strategies, best practices, and policies that lead to decarbonization of industries and businesses, in an economically beneficial and socially conscious manner. With a specific focus on the Global South.
